Weather Information: For MVP Youth Basketball, we are required to adhere to the Tigard-Tualatin School District policy with regards to gym closures due to inclement weather. Please consider volunteering to coach! It is fun and rewarding to coach your child’s team. We are in need of coaches. Head coaches will receive an account credit of $100 toward a future MVP program. Coaching material is provided at the coaches meeting prior to the start of the season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find quick answers to common questions about teams, divisions, uniforms, schedules, locations, coaching, and game-day expectations for MVP Youth Sports League.

Teams & Divisions

  • How are individual athletes placed on teams?

Athletes are placed on teams on a first-come, first-served basis after registration is complete. We do our best to honor requests, but placements are not guaranteed if a team is already full.

  • What are the age groups?

Divisions are based on grade level:

Flag Football: Kindergarten/1st Grade, 2nd/3rd Grade, 4th/5th Grade, and 6th–8th Grade.

Basketball: Kindergarten, 1st Grade, 2nd/3rd Grade (co-ed), 2nd/3rd Grade (girls).

Divisions may change based on registration numbers.

  • How many athletes are on each team?

Teams have at least 5 athletes. Flag football teams have up to 10 athletes. Basketball teams typically have up to 8 athletes, though some may have up to 10 and play 5-on-5 instead of 4-on-4.

Athlete Experience & Uniforms

  • What is included with registration?

Registration includes a fun youth sports experience, small teams, equal playing time, an MVP reversible jersey to use during the season, weekly trading cards, and an MVP T-shirt and medal at the end of the season.

  • Does the league provide uniforms?

Yes. Each athlete receives an MVP reversible flag football or basketball jersey to wear during the season. Jerseys are returned at the end of the season in exchange for an MVP T-shirt. Flag belts are provided for flag football games and returned after each game. Athletes also receive a trading card after each game and a medal after the final game.

  • How much playing time will my athlete get?

We do our best to provide equal playing time for every athlete. Coaches rotate athletes throughout the game so kids can learn fundamentals, practice good sportsmanship, and try different positions during the season.

  • What awards to athletes receive?

Each athlete receives one trading card per week and a medal at the end of the season.

Coaching & Officiating

  • How many coaches are assigned to each team?

Teams are led by volunteer coaches, usually parents. When needed, high school or college students, often former football or basketball players, may also volunteer. We aim to have a head coach and assistant coach for each team, though some teams may rely on one coach with additional parent support.

  • How much time is required for volunteer coaches?

Volunteer coaches lead one 30-minute practice before each game. Games last about 1 hour for flag football and 45 minutes for basketball.

  • Who officiates the games?

Basketball games are officiated by the coaches.  We find that this helps with equalizing playing time, opportunities to touch the ball, and consistency in calling violations.

Flag Football games are officiated by trained referees, often high school or middle school-aged officials who understand the sport and aim to call fair games.

If you have a concern, please speak with the on-site field coordinator or contact MVP Youth Sports League.

Schedule & Locations

  • How often do teams practice?

Teams practice on Sundays before games.

Flag football includes a 30-minute practice followed by a 1-hour game.

Basketball includes a 30-minute practice followed by a 45-minute game.

Practices are not mandatory, but attendance is encouraged so athletes get the full program experience.

  • How long do practices and games take?

Practices and games are held back-to-back on Sundays (or on a designated weeknight for Summer leagues). Plan for about 1 hour and 30 minutes for flag football and 1 hour and 15 minutes for basketball.

  • Are games played on holiday weekends?

We do not play on Easter Sunday, Memorial Day weekend, 4th of July, or Thanksgiving weekend. We do play on Mother’s Day and Super Bowl Sunday. On Super Bowl Sunday, games start two hours earlier so the schedule ends before kickoff.

  • Will my athlete play at the location we choose during registration?

Yes. Your athlete will practice and play at the location selected during registration, unless locations need to be combined based on registration numbers.

  • When and where are practices and games?

Practices and games are held on Sundays (or a dedicated weeknight in the case of Summer seasons) at the location selected during registration. Specific times are set before the season starts. There are no weekday practices or games, except for summer leagues.
